Mark Masonry in East Suffolk can trace its history back to 1769 when The Royal Sussex Lodge No.91 met at The Star Inn, Yarmouth. This meeting was attended by the Provincial Grand Master, and as a result 12 Freemasons were Advanced to the degree of Mark Master Mason. It is interesting to note that this Lodge still meets today, albeit now outside of the Province of East Suffolk.
In 1790, The Provincial Grand Lodge of East Suffolk was formed and it is this body that has had the responsibility for the administration and governance of Mark Masonry in East Suffolk since then.
The list of Provincial Grand Masters is long and distinguished which includes such names as the Earl of Stradbroke, Lord Huntingfield, Lord Middleton and Lord Rendlesham. However one name stands out from all others; that of General Sir John Warren who held office for an incredible 42 years from 1814 until his death in 1856.
In recent years there have been a number of new initiatives including the formation of a ‘virtual’ Lodge called ‘Stroud’ which meets on-line via Zoom or Teams and also a new Chapter called ‘East Anglian’ which is dedicated to raising funds for our two charities; St Elizabeth Hospice and The Masonic Samaritan Fund.
